Chapter Three
Once Dane and Abigail returned from the drive, he went to his apartment. Dane sat in a chair holding his phone. Taking a deep breath, he made a call.
"Yeah, what ya got?" Said the voice on the phone.
"We need to talk. Come on up." Dane said then ended the call.
Within a few minutes, there was a knock at the door. Dane opened it. Loki entered with a puzzled look on his face.
"What's with all the cloak and dagger, man?" Asked Loki.
"We need to talk about Abby," Dane muttered.
"Yeah, that was crazy," Loki responded.
“Yeah, well, if you think that was crazy, here's another one for you. Abby thinks Ann is alive and claims to have seen her today." Dane deadpanned.
Dropping in the chair behind him with confusion on his face. "What do you mean today?"
"At graduation. She thinks she saw her on the balcony. She said she waved to her then walked by me, touched my shoulder. Thing is I remember someone touching me, but I was too irritated with Cain's shit to be bothered with looking up." Dane said as he ran a hand over his head.
"No, it couldn't be. Who would fuck with us like that?" Loki asked, feeling sick.
"Anybody that knows she's dead. She knows we didn't find her body. Hell, anyone who has it out for Cain. We still never found out who the real mole was." Dane told him. "But that's not what the problem is at the moment. Abby has noticed the distance between us all. She wants to know why. Hell, she demanded it."
"Do you really think she can handle what's on those tapes? I mean it's hard to swallow?" Loki asked.
"That's not all. She also said that she knew something no one else knew. Abby won't tell us what she knows till we fess up."
"Abby was just a kid when all that shit went down. What the hell could she know that we don't?" Loki said.
"You do know you're talking about Abby, right? Hell, that girl probably knows more than we think she does." Dane said, rubbing the back of his head with worry.
"Look, maybe you're right. But if she doesn't see the truth for herself, she might just get hurt trying to find it elsewhere." Loki told him, leaning back in his seat. "Besides, what if she really does know something we missed? They got close, real close."
The idea of breaking Abby's heart by allowing her to see those tapes killed him, but Dane knew he was speaking the truth. "She will. We need to be the ones to tell her and telling her won't be enough. We'll have to show her the tapes."
"When do you want to do this thing?" Loki asked, running a hand over his shaved head.
"As soon as possible. I really don't think she'll wait much longer before she takes things into her own hands. You get the equipment set up and I'll talk to her. Cain is leaving in an hour for a business trip. He'll be gone for a week. We can show her tonight. That will give her some time to process." Dane said as he stood to his feet. "It's going to be a long week."
