Aftermath: Dane Ch.4

Chapter Four

Abigail sat motionless, staring at the now blank screen on the television. The tears ran down her face. Her chin quivered. She opened her mouth to speak, but unable to say a word, she closed it again.

Dane placed his hand on her shoulder. "I'm so sorry that you had to see this. It's a hard pill to swallow, but we needed you to understand why things have been all fucked up since that night. We had her hidden for weeks after that night, but your dad got too close to finding her so we arranged for Ann to leave town. We had already known about the contract out on her. We are assuming they were the ones that killed her and took her body so that no one could investigate." He told her, his own heart aching.

"Your dad blamed Ann for you getting shot. Then he snapped. His mind just blocked some shit or something. We don't really know. There is a lot of tension between us all. We've all tried to keep you out of it. We needed you to know that even if Ann was alive, this would be the last place she would come back to. It's just not safe. I think someone is fucking with your head, baby girl." Loki said with hurt on his face.

"But if there is something you know that we don't, it could help us find out who got this shit started. No matter what. We should know." Loki said as he knelt down beside her.

Abigail shook her head. "No, I don't know anything. I just said that to get you to tell me why you're all so distant." The tears still rolled down her cheek.

"You were pretty sure earlier today," Dane said.

It was barely noticeable, but he almost missed it. Abigail had a small envelope in her hand. It was old and worn and was still sealed. She slid it into her pocket.

"I'll drop the subject. I won't try looking for her anymore if you guys promise that you all will find out who killed her," Abigail told them.

"We will do our best, Little Red, " Loki told her, seemingly relieved by her words.

Abigail got up from her seat. She gave them both a hug and left the room.

Loki looked at Dane. "Why do I get the feeling that this isn't over?"

"Because it isn't. She knows something,"

"How do you know?"

"Well, you see, my Latino brother, we are talking about Abigail Cane. She had an envelope in her hand then slipped it into her pocket just before she left the room. And I'm sure she'll make damn sure nobody gets their hands on it," Dane said, running his hands through his hair. "I don't know what's in that girl's head, but we need to keep a watch on her for now on."
